Coffee.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">The thought of it brings the smell.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Patrick is downstairs. I wonder if he&#8217;s looking for a sign.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">A trail of code that might comfort.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I hear beans tumbling into the grinder.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I turn to look at the paintings in my studio&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">and&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I can smell Sui&#8217;s Chinese pantry<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">The scent of hot, dry, wooden houses.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">A particular Texas summer,&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Clear and bright. Blinding sun.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Was it wool? I can&#8217;t remember.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Flip flops and jeans.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">The window unit rattles on.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">The kettle whistle and coffee grinder&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">signal the four minute mark<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I wonder at the time.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">December, just north of the snow line.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">My shoulder is tense from the cold and damp of this day.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Patrick brings up coffee.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Silent looks at the painting over the drafting table<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t Ask Me Stupid F@#&amp;ing Questions&#8221; speaks from the wall.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Coffee.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">He drifts back down the hall.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Again,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">the dryness of the summer sunroom fills my lungs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I see him cooking in his yellow kitchen,&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Incandescent,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">glazed in sesame oil,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Dusted with five spice powder.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">&#8220;What are you making?&#8221; I remember asking,&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Concerned for the future of the onions and potatoes in my bag.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know, &#8230; weird Chinese food I think.&#8221;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">In one hand, a smoking, hand rolled cigarette punctuates the gesture.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Other cigarettes burn like incense in ashtrays scattered about the house<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">He&#8217;s talking to me. Asking me questions.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Wearing Sui&#8217;s sweater, but I don&#8217;t know that.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">She is not here in the dry heat, &#8230;&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I hadn&#8217;t known them together really.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Just a dinner at a Chinese restaurant.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Some surprise that I could use chopsticks.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Her suspicion of me and Patrick together&#8230;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">That was in the eyes. No language barrier there.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">A drive to the airport.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I&#8217;m back in the doorway to the kitchen.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Patrick&#8217;s on a volunteer trip.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Rebuilding palapas near an archeological site.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">He said he&#8217;d call from San Antonio.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Days have passed.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">There is no message.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">That sweater barely covers his sides.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Steam billows up from the wok.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">The sweater is taught between the shoulders.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">It was July. It was hot out and in.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Sui was making her way.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I marvel at the bags and boxes in the pantry.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">No Phone Call.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Chinese writing and strange illustrations.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">He has no Idea what this stuff is.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Sky rise apartments in Montreal,&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Government housing projects.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">An architect on her way to a career in Hong Kong.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Biding time, both of us.&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I hear our Border Collie on the stairs.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Outside the window it is snowing.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Moving slower than usual,<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">A syncopated, determined gate.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I turn to see her navigate the doorway.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">My slippers are saddled over her shoulders.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Brimming with herd dog pride.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">I realize my feet are still bare from my shower.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">The lining is warm.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">Patrick&#8217;s phone signals an email&#8217;s arrival.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">It is Sui. I carry the phone into the hall.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: 'Lucida Sans';\">He is there. We read it together.
